PHILHARMONIC HOUSE OF DESIGN

It’s that time of year when interior designers come together to pull out all the stops and share with the public, their many creative talents. I always look forward to seeing what each of the many talented designers have done to their respective rooms, and, of course, this giving them the opportunity to really showcase some fabulous textiles, antiques, artwork and furniture as well as the talents of the artisans that have worked with them. This year’s house, which opened on May 5th and will run through May 31st, is located in the exclusive community of Shady Canyon in Orange County, California. The 2015 House of Design is a 15,000 square foot Provençal style-estate. The home, built as a destination retreat for a growing family, has eight bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, a $45,000 French La Cornue stove, one of two private tennis courts in Shady Canyon, a solar powered pool and countless other amenities. If you are able to visit one of the nation’s most prestigious showcase homes, it benefits the Philharmonic Society and its Youth Music Education Programs.

While not visible in this image, the rooms’ ceiling is an oval coffer which was embellished with a detailed plaster-like design of an era’s past, with a nod to the Moroccan designs so popular today. Painstakingly silver-leafed and gold-gilded, the ceiling created a rich, warm ambiance within the room. Interior Design, Beverly Stadler, ASID, CID.

KENDELL WILKINSON ~~~

San Francisco Decorator Showcase

Designed for the San Francisco Decorator Showcase, this showstopping project was inspired by a fictional muse described by Wilkinson as a “young, jet-setting woman with a passion for fashion.” I can remember during my design school days, which weren’t all that long ago, where we had to “create” our design client. And, of course, they were our quintessential client. The very best client one could have, because, of course, they were fictional. So,with this fictional client in mind, the walls were painted a teal blue. For drama, orange accents were added including draperies in a coral toile fabric ( a chinoiserie – inspired toile). The focal point of the room was a delicate tree mural painted by a renowned artist. I remember seeing the image of the bedroom with the hand-painted mural behind the bed. I loved it and saved it to one of my early Pinterest Boards.

PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE 2014

Showcase houses are a wonderful venue to display design trends. At the recent Pasadena showcase house, 25 designers had the wonderful opportunity to transform a 1915 English Arts and Crafts estate while retaining the home’s warm spirit. Drama comes from abundant color installed throughout the 8,200-square-foot house, including chocolate brown walls in the hallways and vibrant green tones in the dining and great rooms. Mixed metals add further appeal as silvery paint and shimmering wallcoverings blend with brass, copper and gold fixtures and accessories.

There are some surprising touches. A new Walker Zanger collection of intricate tile designs makes a splash in the bathrooms. Decorative head busts — another trend —- add visual interest and keep the eye moving along the tour.

Designer Michael Berman described his comfortable dining room as more “country” than “town,” with an antler mounted on a mirror above the fireplace and a chandelier made from bayonets hanging from the papered ceiling. The dining table is left undressed, adding to the casual feel that permeates the design house.

Indeed, the kitchen and butler’s pantry are open, with informal living areas designed for visiting. “The goal was for the family to be together,” said designer Cynthia Bennett, noting the bar stools placed around the travertine island.

I am, however, very much looking forward to visiting the Philharmonic House of Design Showcase House benefiting the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. June 3 – June 29, 2014, located on Southern California’s Last untouched coastline —- Dana Point’s The Strand at Headland’s. Nineteen interior designers will transform this exclusive oceanfront property into a Mediterranean Modern masterpiece.
