Interior Design: Windsor Smith
It’s hard to believe that this sprawling ranch home in the rolling hills of California is smack dab in the middle of the city of Los Angeles…..but it is, and it occupies about 3 acres of land in Brentwood. The homeowners (the wife to be exact and her two daughters) are equestrians. So, naturally, this is a horse property complete with horses, of course! The mother and her two daughters workout with their horses practicing and competing in various dressage events. Oh my, certainly something I have always dreamed about. As a former hunter/jumper/equestrian rider and horse owner, I always fantasized about living on a ranch with several horses……Sigh and Sigh again!!!
The home embraces the beautiful, genteel elements of classic Italian and Spanish Colonial styles. I love the thick beams, cascading draperies and tall mirror. Speaking of those cascading draperies, what Windsor Smith has to say about the window treatments, not only speaks to their practicality but also to the principles of design. “Of course, during the daytime, the curtains protect from the glare”. “The roof lines are not high, so I hung the drapery at the top of the wall to lift the eye. . . .rather than use a big, heavy treatment, I chose a small rod that’s less ornate and more youthful.”
A bold painting by James Nares in a traditional dining room.
Another view in the dining room with bold art, antique table and 18th-c. dining chair.
An expansive kitchen, with windows framing a gorgeous vista.
The gorgeous vista. There are the horses!! My dream!!!
I think this speaks for itself. . . .dream, dream, dream. . . .
Visions to Inspire. Design to Enrich.
