YELLOW IS FOR HAPPY

Happy Yellow…..it is the color of the mind and the intellect. Being the lightest hue of the spectrum, the psychology of yellow is uplifting and illuminating, offering hope, happiness, cheerfulness and fun. It is the best color to create enthusiasm for life and can awaken greater confidence and optimism. Using yellow in home decor is a wonderful opportunity to bring freshness and energy to a space and for fashion, a bright, yellow outfit may help bring a spirit of perkiness or renewed confidence.

With a little understanding about the psychology of  the color yellow, let’s see how we can be inspired by this primary color.

These bold, super saturated, luscious silk drapes certainly liven up the space. They caused so much excitement that they drained the energy right out of this little girl. She looks so peaceful all curled up on the yellow striped fauteuil chairs.

Love how happy these chairs look in their bright yellow velvet.

WINDOW DRESSING

One of the many aspects of design that I truly enjoy, is dressing windows. It is just another layer in the design of a space that can be built upon and embellished. Of course, it is important to understand the basic needs of the occupants using the space. Do they need light control? Privacy? UV protection? Protection from heat and cold? Maybe the windows only need to be dressed in a way that softens the hard edges. Once the fundamentals of function have been addressed, the truly creative process of layering then begins. I liken it to fashion. There are many ways you can take a basic outfit from simple and purposeful to fabulous and stunning!

The images I’ve selected are just a small sampling of  beautifully dressed windows. I have many other inspirational images that I will share for another time. In the meantime, ENJOY……

A large, graphic floral has been used as decorative side panels over a natural, woven shade. And, layered at the leading edge of the drapery panel, is a beautiful tassel tape. I love how the drapery fabric has been repeated again on the upholstered chair.

24409cd052f02f09b9c81215f6c7087b

Layer, over layer, over layer. Here we see a cornice box layered over a stationary drapery under-treatment, which is layered over a flat-roman shade. And, I love the embellishments….nailhead trim on the cornice, a tassel, bead trim down the leading edge of the drapery, and a similar bead trim is repeated on the bottom edge of the roman shade.

31af3e8e1822ebae879fb27eefe1dfaf

Another beautiful, embellished window treatment. Tapes at the leading edge make such a stunning statement. It’s like a layer of jewelry…..pearls added to the little black dress.

676faa2d9fa4b530e7e7d204457b1cc0

Strong, graphic geometric on the roman shade and a grand band of navy, makes for a bold and sophisticated statement on a pair of French doors.

3559a57cac83886dfe90671e803c4e40

Another example of  layered treatments. Here we see a shutter treatment being used to control light and privacy. I love shutters for their function and architectural aesthetics, but they become even more beautiful when they have been layered and softened with the addition of drapery side panels and a tailored, soft cornice top treatment. And, don’t forget the details, in this case, a layering of a simple grosgrain tape, which creates another layer and another graphic element.

6ea761cda58eb7f61b33830ca36fbdd9

Layering drapery treatments isn’t limited to just windows. You can treat your tub surround as if it were a window.

HOUSE TOUR ~ A MANHATTAN BEACH COUPLE DO OPPOSITE OF DOWNSIZE

Manhattan Beach, California, is an idyllic beach community and the location where my husband and I began our married life together almost 29 years ago. Back then, we were renting a one-bedroom apartment that was part of a two-story, shingle-sided house, that was right on The Strand. The Strand, as it is known, is a stretch of real estate that runs parallel to the beach from Redondo Beach, to the south, and on up to Playa Del Rey, to the north. At the time, our humble little abode was conveniently located just south of the Manhattan Beach Pier and we could practically fall out of bed onto the sand. Needless to say, we enjoyed watching surfers and dolphin frolic side-by-side, summertime volleyball games and awesome sunsets. We became good friends with the couple that owned the home. As our circumstances changed, we later moved on and they eventually tore the old house down to rebuild their dream home.

When I saw this story in Luxe Interiors + Design, it brought back those wonderful memories of our time in Manhattan Beach and for this empty nest Manhattan Beach couple, the decision to build their dream house came after the kids grew up. They have a large and growing extended family and they wanted to build a house that could meet those needs.

COLOR STORY ~ BRILLIANT BLUE AND BROWN

Blue and Brown ~~

The perfect pair ~~~ and, of course, they should be, after all it’s everywhere in Mother Nature. Blue and brown is, quite wonderfully a match made in heaven. Light and airy hues, dark and rich shades, or a combination of the two. This dynamic duo can jazz up any space.

BOLD GUEST ROOM – The rich, dark chocolate brown wall is a stunning backdrop for bold accessories. The striped wallpaper, above, is an element of surprise. That fifth wall is the perfect spot for an opportunity of whimsy. Bringing in the orange accents really livens up the space.

KENDELL WILKINSON ~~~

San Francisco Decorator Showcase

Designed for the San Francisco Decorator Showcase, this showstopping project was inspired by a fictional muse described by Wilkinson as a “young, jet-setting woman with a passion for fashion.” I can remember during my design school days, which weren’t all that long ago, where we had to “create” our design client. And, of course, they were our quintessential client. The very best client one could have, because, of course, they were fictional. So,with this fictional client in mind, the walls were painted a teal blue. For drama, orange accents were added including draperies in a coral toile fabric ( a chinoiserie – inspired toile). The focal point of the room was a delicate tree mural painted by a renowned artist. I remember seeing the image of the bedroom with the hand-painted mural behind the bed. I loved it and saved it to one of my early Pinterest Boards.

SKUNKED

We’ve been skunked ~~~

Skunks-2

This was not my planned blog post for Wednesday, but there was cause for digression and that would be by these seemingly cute and adorable little critters. Look at those sweet little eyes…..they look so innocent! Butttttt, as humans, we know differently. This little critter packs a powerful weapon beneath its beautifully, plumed tail. You don’t even need to come within close proximity of this little member of the weasel family to know that a skunk is in your neighborhood. They do give off quite a pungent odor.  All that said, my Vizsla doesn’t have the same abilities that we, as humans have, to read all the warning signs, which basically are to STAY AWAY!!!!

The evening played out innocently enough, I got home from work and settled into preparing our dinner. With the evenings being so balmy, we have been enjoying dining al fresco. As we enjoyed our dinner, all of a sudden our Vizsla came bolting through the yard towards our wrought iron fencing that outlines the perimeter of our property. Both my husband and I were completely unaware that a skunk was lurking on the other side, but we certainly knew that he had spotted something. The Vizsla breed is a hunting breed, also known as a Hungarian Pointer. They are basically bird dogs, but the hunter instinct is strong and so they don’t discern between birds and skunks. As a predator, their killer instinct kicks in. And, sadly, that is where our “Duke” got the bad end of the deal. As he charged towards the fence, with every intention of taking out this intruder, little Pepé L’ Amour simply raised his tail and let loose his powerful ammunition.

skunk

Now, mind you, our “Duke” isn’t the only four-legged animal that we have, we also have a miniature dachshund and this little guy is about as tough as they get, I mean this is a breed that was specifically bred to hunt badgers!!! So, naturally, he followed his nemesis to the fence to “protect” our hallowed domain. Thankfully, though, he was spared the brut force of the deadly aromatic spray. That was the skunk’s gift for our “Duke”. Well, we are certainly no amateurs to this little bit of drama. As the owners of dogs for many years, we have had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with this terrible delemma……imagine a Dalmation bathed in tomato paste, because we had always heard that tomato juice was a good remedy for removing the odor, and, not having any tomato juice on hand, we grabbed the tomato paste, ignorantly thinking that tomato paste should do the trick. After all, it’s just concentrated tomato juice. Well that was a failed remedy.

So, we fast forward to today, and here we are dealing with being SKUNKED, again…….UGH!!! But, it isn’t tomato paste or tomato juice that we use for a remedy or even the over-the-counter, Nature’s Miracle Skunk Solution. The absolute, tried and true, sure-fire remedy that I have found is a homemade recipe that truly works.  The Basic Recipe is:

  • 1 quart hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1-2 teaspoons liquid soap (preferably Dawn Liquid Soap)

MOODBOARD MONDAY ~~ #6

Moody Monday Moodboard Musings

Happy Monday to everyone. I hope that everyone had a wonderful 4th of July weekend. We started our 4th with our ritual visit to the Dana Point Harbor for bagels. Of course, our beautiful Vizsla, Duke, accompanied us. Enjoyed a lovely walk around the harbor and enjoyed seeing how many of the boat owners had decorated and set up “party” tables for the long days’ celebration. And, it is a long day of activities. As we made our way around the harbor, many of the activities were already well under way. One of the July 4th “rituals” is the “water fight”.  Dinghies, kayaks, SUPs, and outriggers galore, power up with all kinds of buckets and water guns and the “water fights” get under way as all the reveleries celebrate and enjoy  being doused. Knowing how crazy it can be in the harbor during the 4th, we know to escape its fury and frenzy sooner, rather than later……so we relaxed at the pool at the Monarch Beach Tennis Club, came home and grilled some steaks, followed by a little peak-a-boo view of fireworks from our backyard. Usually we have foggy skies and don’t get very crisp, clear fireworks…..but, this year, the clouds parted and we enjoyed a beautiful fireworks display…….and no traffic to deal with…..Happy, Happy!!!!
