BEST IN SHOW ~~ KITCHENS

SPACIOUS BLUE & WHITE REMODEL

Showhouses give designers the chance to exhibit some of their most ambitious ideas with the best materials and resources available, which is why I love to gasp in delight to see these marvelous rooms. The kitchen has become the hub of the home and are uniquely equipped to showcase the most high-tech and stylish modern appliances.

EASTER CELEBRATIONS

EASTER

It is a very special holiday that we have traditionally celebrated for many years. It has been a communion of family and friends, a blessed celebration in faith as well as the rejoicing in the resurrection of Jesus. And, of course, along with the religious significance of the day, we always enjoy all of the other “fun traditions” of the day…….dyeing Easter eggs, Easter baskets, Easter egg hunts, Easter outfits, the Easter bunny………Easter dinner……. which is something I have traditionally done for several years, but this year, it is going to have to be different. I was upset about it at first, but I’m learning, or trying to learn, that I must be adaptable……flexible. Hmmmm!!!

I now have to “share” my oldest daughter with another family…..grrrrrrr!!!! She is married now, 1 year and 6 months. She and her fabulous husband have a little boy, Jackson, who is a year old and the cutest, most adorable little boy ever. Honestly, I have never seen a baby sooooo happy! They are truly blessed!! Of course I get to have these bragging rights because he is my first grandson, and, well, HE IS TRULY ADORABLE. Anyway………my son-in-law’s grandma (Ome) is having Easter dinner at her house, sooooooo, that meant I had to CHANGE…..UGH!!!!  So, Brunch it is!!  My Lindsay, son-in-law Justin, grandson, Jackson, me (ViVi), hubby (gramps, he hasn’t really settled on what he wants to be called), son Neal, and daughter Melissa, will be doing Easter brunch and I’ve got the menu planned.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR ~~ FLORALS & SILVER

JUST THE OTHER DAY,

I was re-visiting some of my Pinterest Boards for inspiration, and, my gosh, I was amazed at how many “Pins” I have accumulated. You tend to forget what all you have “pinned” over time. It is a bit like pulling out old photo albums…..sitting quietly, maybe with a cup of coffee or tea, and slowly savoring each image. Specifically, I was looking for floral/tablescaping ideas for Spring. Anyhow, each image is like a “little surprise gift”. Wellllll, I happily saw this image that I had saved from Stone Gable. What a delightful find. I will be back to visit often.

I love the tulips in the silver pitcher. Honestly, what a lovely way to use your silver, because, quite frankly, how many times do you put your silver water pitcher on the table to actually use it for ‘water’???? I have to say that I love, love the silver pieces that I have inherited (with exception to the polishing task that goes along with it). All that aside, I totally embrace ‘new’, ‘creative’ uses for these pieces, because, after all, silver is best when it is used.

SILVER & WHITE

I, so love the white with silver, it is simple, but elegant.  And the display looks even more beautiful when paired with a simple silver bowl that has been topped with a handmade nest which can be crafted  here. I hope this inspires you to creatively use your silver……Enjoy!!!!

TIMELESS MANHATTAN APARTMENT ~~ ROB SOUTHERN

VER-Rob-Southern-entry-de

Contemporary art balances traditional elements. Dennis & Leen bench, Vintage French sconces, Art, John Rosis.

“TIMELESS”

This is a word designer Rob Southern uses often when describing the prewar apartment on Manhattan’s upper east side that he recently completed for a young family. How lucky is this “young couple”??? I’m envious…..Anyhow, Southern goes on to explain that, “The clients wanted this home to really hold its own as they changed and grew—it was like having to replace a dress that’s gone out of style in five years time.” Oh my, imagine that??? The luxury…..of change…….

Welllllll, my mouth fell open when I saw this space featured in the March-April issue of Veranda. That blue is the richest, most luxurious shade of blue. Absolutely gorgeous in my opinion. And, I could so enjoy a glass or two of wine in these chairs with a quiet fire crackling in the background. Simply divine!!

VER-Rob-Southern-study-de

Another view of the space with that luscious, luscious blue velvet, which, Mr. Southern so accurately states, “You can’t go wrong with solids, because a color is not something that becomes dated.” And, I, most definitely concur!!! “Patterns often have a tag to them; ‘Oh, that’s a French toile,’ or ‘That’s a chintz.’ Solid colors also keep any one thing from being the main focus. When clients are in the room, they should be the stars”, explains, Rob.

Southern also dislikes using lots of patterns in dining rooms, because of the constraints they add. “The dining room should be a canvas for the beautiful flowers, beautiful silverware, beautiful plates, and people who are at the table.” And, I would have to agree. Too much pattern can be a distraction. Spaces need to be calming, and a bit restrained. The eye needs to have a place to rest, after all this is where you come to unwind and de-stress. And, I think I could definitely do that in this very tasteful and timeless space.

Placid Blue is an obvious choice for a baby boy’s bedroom — but this easy DIY wall design would make a graphic statement in any room.

REMEMBERING ~~ MAYA ROMANOFF

When it comes to decorating, most people settle for wallpaper. Richard “Maya” Romanoff, who passed away on January 15 at 72, offered what can only be described as wall experiences. I have long been a fan!!

After getting his start in the late 1960s by making tie-dyed T-shirts to sell at a Rolling Stones concert, the American entrepreneur brought his talents to other materials by establishing the Maya Romanoff Corporation. Based in the Chicago suburb of Skokie, the award-winning firm specializes in handmade wall coverings with alchemical special effects, impregnated with shimmering mica or mother-of-pearl, spattered with fine glass beads, or inlaid with laser-cut marquetry.

Whether opulent or funky, his work has one thing in common. “It’s got to be beautiful,” Romanoff often said. “That’s the only thing that counts.” mayaromanoff.com
