FOR THE LOVE ~~~ PAISLEY

This organic, tear-dropped shaped motif might conjure images in your mind of the 1960s and 70s, but the pattern is centuries old. The paisley pattern is thought to have originated in Iran during the Persian empire somewhere between 224 and 651 AD.

The name paisley comes from the Scottish town of Paisley. From around 1800 until the 1850s, Paisley was famous for the colorful shawls produced by its weavers. Because of a special edition to their handlooms and Jacquard looms, weavers in Paisley could produce the design with five colors while other weavers were limited to two.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY ~~~ INSPIRATION EMERALD

Believe it or not, the color of St. Patrick was not actually green, but blue! In the 19th century, however, green became used as a symbol for Ireland. In Ireland, there is plentiful rain and mist, so the ‘Emerald Isle’ really is green all year-round. The beautiful green landscape was probably the inspiration for the national color.

Wearing the color green is considered an act of paying tribute to Ireland. It is said that it also brings good luck, especially when worn on St. Patrick’s Day. Sooooo, grab onto some of these visions of green ….. from fashion, to jewelry, to home decor ….. they are certainly…………

A FINE PAIRING ~~CONTEMPORARY AND TRADITIONAL FORM A MIDDLE GROUND

Jennifer Dyer of  Jeneration Interiors, had the awesome opportunity of working with an Internet entrepreneur and avid cyclist, who happened to be pedaling past an in-progress house on a pretty, rural-feeling road in Los Angeles. It was a moment when, he simply knew, this “in-progress” home, would be his family’s home. At the time, he and his wife had a toddler and a baby on the way….It was time to upsize. They moved from a 3,000-square foot condo to a “much larger house”, says designer Jennifer Dyer. “The only things they took with them were a sectional sofa, a dining table, an ottoman and eight chairs.”

Luckily, they were starting with an open and inviting floor plan, beautiful finishes and great bones. “Everything was custom-milled,” according to design principal, Sheryl Schey, who handled the home’s design-build along with business principal David Carlin. Throughout the five-bedroom house, Schey worked with beautiful hand-milled moldings, hand distressed hickory floors and wood ceiling beams and then added eclectic touches such as barn doors in the dining room. “It’s a casual approach to traditional design”, says Carlin.

In the dining room, the designer created a livable yet sophisticated interior to compliment the traditional style of the house. In the dining room, an Ironies light fixture hangs above the owners’ table. The rug is from Patterson, Flynn & Martin.

In the Master Bedroom, the designer upholstered a custom bed with a Pollack fabric, and the sofa is covered with a textile from Kravet. Draperies made with Donghia fabric complement the Ulf Moritz wallpaper, and the wool-and-silk rug made by Patterson, Flynn & Martin.

For the husband’s office, Dyer designed a sofa and had it upholstered with a textile from Michael Jon Designs. She chose a bold Lee Jofa stripe to accent a long bolster and hung sconces from The Urban Electric Co. The coffee tables were custom-made for the space.

A NEW FIND ~~~ CRANE & CANOPY

Being an avid follower of some very inspiring blogs, I was introduced to a wonderful bedding company, Crane & Canopy via Emily A. Clark Interiors. When Crane & Canopy designer and co-founder Karin purchased her first house, she wanted to create a contemporary and elegant home filled with high-quality designer decor and furniture. When she couldn’t find exactly what she was looking for without breaking the bank, she decided to get to work. The result, high quality, beautifully designed home goods at an innovative price.

I am in the process of re-designing my daughters’ bedroom (stay tuned for some before and after images……I hope). Anyhow, I was in need of some new sheets that had a high-end, embroidered look. Think Sferra or Leontine Linens, but without the big $$$$. Sooooo, I was very delighted to have learned about Crane & Canopy. I decided to take the plunge, so to speak, and placed my order.

COLOR INSPIRATION ~~ SPRING IS ALIVE

I recently received my Dunn-Edwards SPECS + SPACES and with spring upon us, I think everyone would agree, we are certainly ready for a new season of inspiration. From design trade shows to fashion shows, color is ready to help shake off the winter-weariness that has kept much of our nation in complete frigidness…..my home state of California would be the exception. The return of color, was evident with the introduction of Pantone’s Fashion Color Report Spring 2014. Displayed, were a range of vibrant and soft hues…..from pastels to vivid brights…….modern twists on the traditional and inspirations from botanical blooms to global travels. Here is a small sampling of 2014 Spring Color palettes to Inspire……..

FAT TUESDAY ~~ HISTORY OF MARDI GRAS ~~ CATHOLIC ROOTS

d39d8fc1bd5e807ff8b888cb582b131b

Mardi Gras, which literally translates to “Fat Tuesdays”, has grown in popularity in recent years as a raucous, sometimes hedonistic event. But its roots lie in the Christian calendar, as the “last hurrah” before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. That is why the enormous party in New Orleans. And, this party ends abruptly at midnight on Tuesday. Battalions of street sweepers push crowds out of the French Quarter towards home.

The French in New Orleans celebrated Mardis Gras with masked balls and parties, until the Spanish government took over in the mid-1700s and banned the celebrations. The ban continued even after the U.S. government acquired the land but the celebrations resumed in 1827. The official colors of Mardi Gras, with their roots in Catholicism, were chosen 10 years later; purple, a symbol of justice; green, representing faith; and gold, to signify power. WARM HOSPITALITY ~~ ICONIC BEVERLY HILLS HOTEL

Bungalow_23_0665

Amanda Milan wrote……

“After two years of ongoing renovations at Hollywood’s iconic Beverly Hills Hotel, New York-based designer Adam Tihany, who is known for his work on Michelin-starred restaurants such as chef Thomas Keller’s French Laundry and Per Se, has begun the final phases of the hotel’s remodel. All 208 guest rooms are expected to be finished by the end of 2014 and will feature Bang & Olufsen televisions, antique bronze lighting fixtures, custom wallcoverings, and walnut and ebonized oak furniture. Upgrades will include leather, mohair, and silk coverings in a neutral palette of creams and taupes with blue, green and yellow accents……all befitting of a Southern California relaxed atmosphere.”

Bungalow_24_0530

“One suite, however, will feature a unique design as part of the Suite 100 program — a celebration of Beverly Hills’ centennial this year, in which five luxury hotels will redesign a suite to capture a Beverly Hills moment from the past 100 years. Tihany’s contribution at the Beverly Hills Hotel will pay tribute to the lifestyle of Marilyn Monroe — a frequent guest — and to Paul Williams, the architect who designed the Polo Lounge. This suite will carry out the theme with black lacquer finishes, tropical prints and shag carpets.”

“The changes to the guest rooms follow Tihany’s 2012 redesign of the hotel’s often-celebrity-filled lobby as well as the famous green and white Polo Lounge and poolside cabanas in 2013. However, the hotel’s red-carpeted entrance and flamingo-pink exteriors, which have been seen in countless films, will remain the same.”
